Viticulturist ( or Winemaker with substantial vineyard experience)

Hans Herzog Estate is one of New Zealand’s most treasured artisan winery and Hans Herzog a well-respected viticulturist/winemaker. Emphasis is on the vineyard to ensure our vines produce the best possible grapes – with over 25 different grape varieties a great and exciting challenge for every viticulturist.
Vineyard and Winery are certified organic.
Lots of manual work goes into vineyard management for a low yielding crop of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Wines are made naturally in our fully equipped winery with its own bottling & labelling equipment and we are proud of our reputation of producing some of the world’s greatest wines.
Qualification
We look for a trained viticulturist with or without winemaking practice or winemakers with sound viticulture experience. It would be of advantage to have experience from a similar small high quality estate where you have learnt to be hands-on and able to help wherever needed. You should be a bit of a “Jack of all trades” with a “can do” attitude.
Position Summary and required Skills
You need to have the necessary skills to carry out all required work in vineyard unsupervised (from pruning and all the work in-between to netting) and have good physical strength and endurance. You need to be a good tractor driver, used to forklift driving and handy in maintaining machinery and equipment for vineyard and winery.
We grow a few fruit, nut and olive trees, have chickens and bees which need looking after, do composting and many other other farm duties.
During Vintage you will be hands-on with picking, collecting bins, handling the press and pump, plunging, pumping over, controlling fermentation, cleaning all harvest machinery, tanks and tools to the high hygiene standards maintained at our estate. Other cellar work includes barrel handling, topping up, racking and cleaning. There is heaps to learn in assisting Hans Herzog nurturing his handcrafted wines.
You should feel confident working with bottling and labelling machines.
A passion for high quality work and high quality wines is essential.
