The Sawmill Brewery and Smoko Room is an independent, New Zealand owned brewery and restaurant in Matakana with a firm focus on producing high quality experiences through our beer and food, while minimising our impact on the environment.
In 2019 we were the first brewery in New Zealand to become B-Corp certified and we are constantly working on ways to improve our social impact.
Our bar is situated right in front of our brew house enabling our customers to enjoy the freshest beer possible in a beautiful, rural setting with true kiwi hospitality. Our beer is unpasteurised, preservative and sugar free.
We need an outgoing, genuinely friendly, experienced, beer loving individual to join our Smoko Room team and lead the charge behind the bar. You will be the first welcoming face of Sawmill people see as they stride through our doors.
We are a 14 tap bar and restaurant located within our brewery with the objective of creating truly outstanding experiences for our customers. Our customers are welcome to come in for a quick pint or stay all afternoon and enjoy our seasonal, sustainable, produce driven menu.
You must be reliable and honest with an excellent attitude towards both your team and our customers. This role requires an individual who is proud to work in hospitality and who is genuinely seeking a longer-term role. Ideally you will also have restaurant experience, in addition to bar experience, as there will be some cross over. A duty managers certificate is a must.This is a full time role - Wednesday to Sunday, although some flexibility. We close at 10pm so no super late nights.
We had a massive fire in October 2019 which has taken us out of action while we rebuild. We are on track to open at the end of May/start of June. This role will not start until the end of May. Date to be confirmed.
You will be confident with guests from all different backgrounds, remember the locals and be welcoming and warm to both the day trippers from Auckland and our increasing numbers of overseas tourists.

Key Responsibilities:
- Have a complete understanding of Sawmill beer, products and processes
- Oversee stock management / Bar ordering / Weekly stocktakes
- Responsible for bar maintenance / Cleanliness / Fortnightly tap cleaning
- Work with the restaurant manager and directors to curate/update the drinks menu
- Excellent communicator and inspirational leader
- Drive our culture, continually inspiring and leading and managing the team both bar and waitstaff
- Enforce brand standards at all times
- Ensure all staff are adhering to all Sawmill protocols/policies
- Train all staff to be knowledgeable about all bar products (incl. merch) and especially Sawmill beer
- Ensure all staff are adhering to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012
- Work with the restaurant manager around staff training / assist with staff meetings
- Work with the restaurant manager in regards to staff performance
- Adhere to our comprehensive recycling/waste minimising policies
- Assist the restaurant manager with recruitment
