Winery Cellar Hand (& Cellar Door) (Wine Jobs: Wine Retail & Sommelier)

Reporting to the Winemaker, the Cellar Hand will display an aptitude for winemaking tasks, and also possess a willingness to showcase and discuss wine in our Cellar Door during weekends, and as needed.

Daily Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Arrive promptly each day to assemble any necessary equipment for the day
  • Be present for the morning meeting with the Winemaker/Viticulturalist to understand daily tasks required
  • Communicate with the Winemaker regarding feedback on the task at hand
  • Ensure safe operating procedures and practices for all winemaking operations – use all safety equipment/PPE available
  • Assist with plant and machinery maintenance programs, notify the Winemaker/Viticulturalist of any equipment in need of service
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment are properly maintained and put away at the end of the day
  • Record keeping as required with particular emphasis on WSMP and SWNZ records
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures to perform all cellar duties in accordance with plans delivered by the Winemaker and OHS standards
  • Participate in all barrel operations and oak maintenance
  • Participate in the harvest season, overseeing crush pad work, red and white fermentations
  • Attention to detail to monitor the quality of the wine is an important element in the job
  • Ensure that winery work areas are maintained in an appropriate state of cleanliness, organisation and hygiene. The role has a primary responsibility for cleaning and sanitation efforts
  • Follow best practice procedures for winery operations, process and systems
  • Contribute to the quality and safety culture of Tantalus
  • Cleaning and preparation of equipment, machinery and winemaking equipment
  • Fruit sorting and fruit processing
  • Racking and pumping over of juice and wine; moving hoses and equipment
  • Making additions to juice and wine
  • The position occasionally requires long hours including nights and weekends particularly over vintage. Work shifts required will be discussed and agreed upon
  • Completing and filling out work orders accurately
  • The Cellar Hand role is particularly busy in periods pre and post-vintage. However, there may be times of the year when the role is less busy. At these times the incumbent should be flexible to spend time working in the Cellar Door taking directions from the Cellar Door Manager
  • Experience in Cellar Door settings and Hospitality and asset
  • As Cellar Door Assistant, you will be required to clearly inform and guide guests during their wine tasting experience 
  • You must have a professional attitude 
  • You will need to become extremely knowledgeable about all the food and drink items on the menu and, in time, understand how different areas of the company operate 
  • You must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with guests and other staff  
  • You must be able to work in a team environment
  • Have great communication skill
