About the job
Marlborough Wine Ltd (MWL) is seeking an exceptional winemaker to lead the production of our portfolio of New Zealand wines which include Toi Toi, Coopers Creek, Staete Landt, Map Maker and Stone Bay.
This is not a role for someone who wants to make only small parcels of ultra-premium wine. We are looking for a commercially minded winemaker who is passionate about crafting outstanding wines across every price point, from everyday drinking styles through to premium and reserve wines.
Our brands are sold throughout New Zealand and internationally, requiring a winemaker who understands both wine quality and market expectations.
You will have the freedom to influence style, quality, sourcing and production decisions while working closely with growers, contract wineries and our leadership team.
Lead the production, quality, compliance and style development of all MWL wines from vineyard through to bottling, ensuring wines consistently exceed customer expectations across multiple brands, regions and price points while maintaining full regulatory compliance.
About the Role
You will be responsible for:
- Leading wine production across the MWL portfolio
- Managing wines from vineyard selection through to bottling
- Working with contract winemaking facilities and production partners
- Developing wine styles tailored to different markets and customers
- Managing blending, tasting and quality decisions
- Supporting vintage operations in Marlborough and Hawke's Bay
- Building strong relationships with growers and winery partners
- Maintaining industry-leading quality standards
- Contributing to innovation and new product development
What We're Looking For
You are:
- Passionate about making exceptional wine
- Equally comfortable creating value wines and premium wines
- Commercially minded and understand consumer expectations
- Collaborative and easy to work with
- Highly organised and detail focused
- Comfortable travelling between regions as required
- Adaptable and able to work with multiple winery partners
- Curious and always striving to improve quality
Ideally you will have:
- 10+ years New Zealand winemaking experience
- Strong Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc expertise
- Experience with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and aromatic varieties
- Exposure to Hawke's Bay red wine styles
- Experience managing contract production
- Strong sensory and blending skills
- Proven ability to consistently deliver wines that outperform their price point
Why Join MWL?
This is an opportunity to have a genuine influence on the future of a growing New Zealand wine company.
You will work across multiple brands, regions and styles while helping shape wines enjoyed by consumers around the world.
If you're driven by quality, creativity and continuous improvement, we'd love to hear from you.
