Vintage Cellar Hand (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Full Time

  BRI Research Winery

  Blenheim, Southland

About BRI, and the role.

Bragato Research Institute (BRI) is the research arm of New Zealand Winegrowers, the national industry body for growers and wineries. We are at the heart of New Zealand’s wine innovation system, driving grape and wine innovation.

At the BRI Research Winery we support the industry’s future, by delivering practical, industry focused research through wine making in our custom-designed winery.

Even though we are physically small, we produce over 200 wines through many different projects each year.

With us, you'll experience vintage within a supportive team on a small but very focused scale, with some great perks and learning opportunities.

What we can offer:

  • Competitive pay-rate based on experience and ability. $26 to $30 p/h.
  • A unique science-focused grape to glass winery/vintage experience like no other in NZ.
  • An interesting opportunity to help create wines with different fruit - (red & white) from multiple NZ wine regions.
  • Guaranteed day shift - 6 days per week (peak period) 8-12 hr shifts (nominate your own day off).
  • Lunches and snacks provided - during peak period.

The successful applicant will be comfortable engaging with various Winery and Winemaking operations such as:

  • Fruit receival
  • Crusher & Press Operation
  • Winery sanitation
  • Innoculations
  • Transfers
  • Additions
  • Sampling

From 06/03/2023 for approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

Potential to carry on with further work for the right candidate.

What we need (in order of importance) is someone with:

  • Outstanding communication skills and an enthusiastic hands-on approach to "on your feet" work.
  • Someone who can work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail (we only get one shot at making each of our research wines).
  • The ability to work up to 12-hour days, 6 days a week during the peak receival period.
  • Someone familiar with winery machinery and wine making practices - particularly grape receival and processing.
  • A passion for wine and an interest in the science behind it would be highly beneficial.
  • Forklift license would be beneficial but not essential.

Experience preferred, but not required - What is more important is a positive attitude, an ability to listen and a willingness to learn.

A reasonable level of physical fitness is also required.

Right to work in New Zealand is essential.
