A little bit about Paroa Bay:

There are few places in the world where you get the sense of land emerging from the ocean

— where you can trace the contours of the land down below the waterline — where land and ocean are not binary or separate, but continuous. New Zealand’s Paroa Bay is one of these places — a sheltered inlet enveloped by a perfectly irregular peninsula —with the larger subtropical and iconic Bay of Islands stretching out across the horizon.

At Paroa Bay Winery we have a perceptive and holistic approach to winemaking, one that listens to the natural rhythms of the earth and utilises the invaluable touch of the human hand in the making process.

As a small vineyard with only 16,000 vines, and focussing on a handful of varietals

— Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec — our ethos dictates low-yield and high- quality vintages that are sensual representations of our physical environment.

Utilising dry-grown viticulture, we rely solely on the natural seasonal cycles to provide for our grapes with no irrigation, so our vines can’t help but be in tune with mother nature. As the wine makers, we follow suit, hand pruning and picking our vines into open crates and using making techniques steeped in tradition. In this way we let our unique terroir reveal itself through the nuanced wines produced at Paroa Bay.

With a humid tropical climate, steep terrain, sea breezes, and volcanic white clay soil, the hills of Paroa Bay can be a challenging environment for wine making, but given the deftest of touches, and a sensitive ear to the cycles of the environment, we’ve been growing and making some of New Zealand’s finest wines since 2012.
